In this session, Shaun Brown, Facilities Master Planner, examines how the discipline of space planning shapes the buildings that communities depend on — schools, city halls, hospitals, and university campuses — and why that discipline is becoming more consequential as two global forces converge: accelerating climate change and rapid urban population growth.
Right now, between 20–40% of publicly owned office and civic space is underutilized at any given time – not because communities don’t have needs, but because facility decisions are often made reactively, without a plan. These decisions carry substantial financial, operational, and service-delivery costs, while proactive planning strengthens capital efficiency, safety, and public trust.
Shaun will examine how these pressures play out across four sectors: state government and municipalities, K–12 schools, higher education, and medical facilities. He’ll use the K–12 sector as a detailed, end-to-end case study of enrollment forecasting, stakeholder engagement, climate resilience integration, and capital delivery.
This session also surveys the technologies reshaping the field, including Building Information Modeling (BIM), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Internet of Things (IoT) occupancy sensors, discrete event simulation, digital twins, and artificial intelligence — these tools are meant to augment, not replace, the professional judgment of experienced space planners.
