Understanding What You Need - Accessibility Codes vs. Universal Design

Date and time

Thurs, May 29th, 2025 | 12:00-1:00 PM (UTC-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada)

About

Creating an accessible and inclusive built environment has become an important mandate for many organizations and institutions.

Various governments (federal, provincial, or municipal) and independent organizations (e.g. Rick Hansen Foundation, CSA) have created their own accessible design guidelines. Between these guidelines, there are varying requirements, and the objectives may be different. Some guidelines, typically building codes, focus on barrier-free accessibility (i.e. removing barriers), and some focus on universal design (i.e. creating an environment usable for everyone). With a wide variety of design standards to choose from, it may be difficult for organizations to identify which standard is best for them in terms of suitability and feasibility.

What You’ll Gain

In this webinar, Roth IAMS will explore the differences and nuances of the design standards between Barrier-free Accessibility and Universal Design. Understanding these differences can help you identify the most suitable standard to use when assessing your facilities.

Join our presentation by Practice Leader in Accessibility, Senior Facility Assessor, and Technical Reviewer, Andrew Chow, to learn more about:

  • Defining Barrier-Free Accessibility and Universal Design
  • Differences between Accessibility Codes (Building Codes) and Universal Design Standards
  • Impact on accessibility audits when selecting standards
  • Impact on feasibility (financial and implementation) when selecting standards
  • Who should attend: If you manage facilities, design or assess accessibility, oversee compliance, or
  • influence policies in higher education, government, healthcare, or beyond, this webinar is for you!

We look forward to having you attend the event.
